IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN IN THE SHADE

Most kindergarteners know what an octopus is.  But it takes someone with an abundance of whimsy to imagine that creature cultivating an underwater garden.  Such a person is Richard Starkey, better known as the Beatles’ “Ringo Starr,” who wrote “In an Octopus’s Garden in the Shade.”  The song feeds our imaginations, setting off capricious, fanciful notions, evoked in this antic quilt, under the water where the sun’s powerful rays are unable to penetrate.
